Analysis

Some people call Hotohori vain, obsessive, jealous, and even think he tried to rape Miaka. Here I want to analyze the most common misconceptions about the young emperor (with a mostly un-biased argument..).

Misconception #1- He's obsessed with his looks
This is not actually true. Hotohori knows he's gorgeous. He's the emperor and has probably been being told he's gorgeous since the day he was born (not to mention he isn't blind... he HAS a mirror, people). He is good looking and he and everybody around him knows it, but it never comes up other than comic relief (like when Tamahome's little sister thought he was a woman and he said he was a man and she said "But you're so pretty." and he hugged her [sweatdrops abounded]). His vanity isn't really a main point of him. Yes, he knows he's hotter than fire in July, but he also doesn't want people to love him just because he's good looking (among other things).

Misconception #2 - He's obsessed with Miaka
Obsessed isn't the right word. Hotohori loves Miaka, or thinks he does anyway. He grew up believing that one day the Miko would come to save Konan and would settle down with him, taking away his lonliness. He got so caught up in his fantasy, that he fails to see that Miaka isn't his dream woman and doesn't love him like he loves her. If it were obsession, he wouldn't gracefully step down from competition so Tamahome could have her. He loves her enough that he knows Miaka will only be happy with Tamahome, and accepts that, even if he can't make himself stop loving her. He loves her enough that he wants her to be happy, even if he's miserable, which I think is pretty admirable.

Misconception #3 - He wants in Miaka's pants
Okay, so he does get her on the bed a few times, but seriously, any idiot can see that he loves Miaka. He wouldn't force her because it would hurt her and he could never hurt her. Yes, he loves her and wants to show her that (and he's a GUY, guys always want sex), but he'd never go so far as to force her.

Misconception #4 - He only cares about himself
Anybody who's watched the series knows that this guy has a heart of gold. He's lived a pretty sheltered life so far, and really honestly isn't aware of how some of the people of his country live, but when he went to Tamahome's house and saw how they lived, he was really upset. Hotohori truly cares for his people.

Misconception #5 - He's a useless weakling
Hotohori has some really bad luck. Whenever somebody attacks them, he and Nuriko are always the first to be somehow incapacitated. Trust me, if he didn't have such damned bad luck, he'd be the first (aside from probably Tama, although he's gone half the time anyway) to be in front of Miaka, ready to protect her. See more on how he's not a weakling in the Power section.

That's all I've got in here now. If I think of anything else, I'll add it.
