Hotohori, or Saihitei, as he's really named, is (in case you didn't notice the name of this site...) the emperor of Konan, the country that Miaka is pulled into by the Universe of the Four Gods to save. Hotohori became emperor after his father died when he was just fourteen. He became a puppet ruler until his mother died at which time he gained actual rule instead of sitting on the throne and looking pretty (which he does quite well, I might add...). The young emperor takes his duties seriously, despite the fact that he's only eighteen years old, and is also a kind ruler. When he saw how Tamahome and his family lived, he was upset that people in his kingdom lives such simple and poor lives and offered them a house in Eiyo, the capital. Since he was very young, he had been trained to be emperor. He was taught fencing and educated beyond what a normal person would be. Because he was never really allowed to have a childhood, Hotohori is very reserved and adult for his age, and also very lonely. Being the emperor has many downsides. One of them being, you can never really be sure if somebody is your friend because of you, or because of your position. He had, as far as we know, no friends. When he heard of the Suzaku no Miko and that she would come to save Konan, he fell in love with her, or rather, the idea of her.
